Interval Training
Lack of time and lack of results are the two most often cited reasons for not working out. Well Interval Training can be your answer to both of these dilemmas, and it is something we build upon here at Healthy Inspirations .
What is Interval Training?:
Interval training is most commonly thought of as using short bursts of intense activity immediately followed by what is referred to as a Recovery Period. This Recovery Period is NOT a stoppage of activity, rather it is a period of less intense activity. Most athletes know the most common form of Interval Training under another name, "fartlek", which is Sweedish for "speed play". For example, if you walk for 3 miles each night, try walking at your usual pace and then pick up the pace every few minutes and then returning to your normal pace.
This type of training is not only very efficient, but it can save you from injury, cut down on the amount of training time you need, and can help you avoid plateaus where you don't see an increase in ability or conditioning.
At Healthy Inspirations, we use a 29 minute exercise circuit, but we follow the principles of Interval Training to help ensure you avoid injuries, save time while getting results, and keep from getting bored with "the same old routine". We use the following methods to help you achieve your goals and still get the most from your exercise workout:
1. Changing the order of the equipment monthly. You'll notice that the machines will be in a different order come the first week of each month.
2. Change the tension on the machines. This ensures your muscles don't get used to a constant load or pattern, helping them to continue to tone and firm.
3. Change in the timing intervals on each machine. This can be easily accomplished by simply changing the workout tapes or classes to vary the length of your activity.
4. Varying the intensity of the workout. In addition to us changing the time and tension, you can vary your intensity by changing the speed in which you perform your exercises, thereby placing more or less of a load on your muscles.
Of course, we realize that we are all "creatures of habit" and change can be challenging at times (to say the least). However, following these simple principles of Interval Training will help ensure you maximize your time and keep your body moving towards your fitness and health goals.
